Kumbh Mela

I have taken this series of images during the Maha Kumbh Mela 2024. It took place in Prayagraj, India.

Sunset Sale

A warm image of a woman standing beside many cans, with a orange tent in the background

When walking along the bustling streets of Prayagraj during the Kumbh Mela, I spotted this lonely lady selling many varieties of cans. These cans are used to carry holy water from the river Ganga. The sunset was side-lighting the woman, giving the image a very warm vibe.

A unique roadside Salon

An image of a person getting a shave

The crowded but calming streets of Prayagraj were filled with many street barbers like him during the Kumbh Mela. They were busy since there were so many people wanting to get their hair done. I like this particular image because of the golden light on them, and the various colours present.

The serene sunrise

I feel like this image has a very calm vibe. When photographing people bathing in the Yamuna one early morning, a girl walked into the frame pointing at something in the distance. This gave me the perfect opportunity to get a good subject in the foreground.

The war of words

I really like the expressions on their faces – the disciple is trying very hard to convince the master, while the master is looking dead ahead, without paying any heed. The golden light on their faces elevates the look of the image.

Suppressed Snake

We spotted numerous snake charmers during the Kumbh Mela. These King Cobra’s fangs were pulled out, and they were kept in a box made of straw for long periods of time. Many people even requested the Charmer to take photos of them holding the serpent. I timed this shot perfectly to portray the captive snake in a unique way.
